Probably another repeat.....

and I'm very sorry if you've seen this photo of my mums already. I'm still in a mourning mode and haven't taken any new photos lately. Once I get back to normal or at least partway there, I'll share some new ones, I promise!

Yellow Marigolds

Can't seem to think straight these past couple days since my mother-in-law's passing so I apologize if I've already shared this photo of some of my marigolds. They are so pretty, aren't they?

A Sad Heart Today

No photo today! My mother-in-law passed away this afternoon from pneumonia complications linked to the 2 strokes she'd had almost 2 months ago. She hadn't been able to do anything for herself at all and after a 7 week hospital stay, she asked to go home to die. She lasted 5 days at home then gave up. She was one very tough, strong, stubborn lady who had a big heart and would do anything for anyone! She will be missed! Rest in peace, Mom. We love you.

Sneak Peek

I have been busy the past few days creating an amazing mini album out of cards and envelopes. It's not quite done so I am only giving you a sneak peek of the cover today. I can't wait to show you the entire album soon. You are going to be totally amazed when you see this album! I've also been working on a couple more mini albums and when they are done, I'll share those, too!

Happy Belated Birthday

I meant to post this a couple days ago when it was my oldest granddaughter's birthday because this is the card I made for her. But I totally forgot to post it and wish her a Happy Birthday!  I know...I'm a bad grandma! I hope she had a nice day!

Perpetual Calendar

Here's a perpetual calendar I made yesterday to put into a 12" x 12" scrapbook frame. I wanted to use a calendar stencil that I bought from The Crafter's Workshop recently but hadn't tried out yet. I think I really like it!

I traced the stencil with a black marker onto a 12" x 12" sheet of cardstock then stamped a design in 2 of the corners with Goldrush ink by Close To My Heart. I then put a strip of pattern paper from the Florentine paper pack also by CTMH at the top then put the whole page inside the frame.

Since there is glass in the frame, I wrote the month and the dates on the outside of the glass with a dry erase marker along with some special events for the month, including my birthday! Then the following month, I will erase the dates and special events and add new ones for October. Pretty cool, huh?

Mums Already?

My mums have been blooming now for almost a month. I think it's a wee bit too early for them to be blooming but they sure are pretty. I hope they don't die out too early since they've bloomed earlier than usual. They are such a beautiful part of Fall that it won't be the same if they're not blooming then.

Blue as I feel right now!

I took this photo a few days ago when I was making my homemade pasta sauce but it didn't get put on the scrapbook page I made about it because it was too blue! All the other photos I used had mainly red in them so this just didn't fit.

I guess I should have used a red bowl instead of a blue one but how appropriate this blue one was as it was full of ice cold water. I love the blue in this photo though! Isn't it gorgeous?

Meet Myrtle

If I've already posted this photo, I apologize for the repeat. It is late and I am so tired again.

My mother-in-law is extremely ill and may not make it through the night so my mind has been elsewhere lately. It is so hard to know a loved one will be passing on soon as I'm sure those of you who have lost one know the feeling. It's so very sad! :-(

Petunias

Real quick post because it's late and I'm very tired.
This pot full of petunias that sits on our deck
has done so well they are overflowing.
So pretty to look at!

Impatiens Again

These Impatiens are just gorgeous hanging on the window of the shed. I couldn't resist taking another photo of them since they got fuller these past couple months. They really catch my eye when I'm outside hanging up laundry. I am trying to enjoy them even more because soon they will be gone.

Airing my dirty laundry

Well actually it's my 'clean' laundry now! Just needed something different to photograph and my clean clothes hanging on the line is what I picked!

Reading Material

I am an avid reader and wanted to make a scrapbook layout about my love for reading so I took a picture of this stack of some of my favorite books and magazines to include on the layout. I love the photo and will share the layout when it is complete.

Through the Grass

I love looking at these marigolds through the blades of the ornamental grasses. They line the edge of the driveway and this particular angle really draws my eyes to them.

Spider Update

Remember this post from a few days ago about a creepy spider hanging in my mums? Well, I have an update on the type of spider this is. A friend of mine - thanks, Mary! - did some research for me and found out that this creepy spider (all spiders are creepy to me) is called a Black & Yellow Argiope and is quite common in gardens. I actually couldn't find the link that Mary sent me but this one also works.

I'd actually forgotten about him for a couple days and when I was watering my mums this morning, I noticed that I got his web all wet. Love how the water drops look, don't you? Can you see the spider in there? He's there, trust me. The squirting hose hardly made him flinch at all. I wonder how long he'll hang around?

Yummy Southwest Omelet

I haven't shared any recipes here in a long time so I figured it was time for one. This was my breakfast this morning and it sure was yummy!

I found the recipe on the Dr. Oz website somehow when I clicked on a link about 5 minute microwaveable power breakfasts which was shared by The Cooking Mom.

I'm always looking for healthy recipes to help me stay on the slimmer side and this one sounded really good! According to 'someone' this southwest omelet is supposed to burn fat. Well, I didn't lose any weight today so I guess I need to eat it more often to give it time to work. Ha ha!

Doesn't really matter if it helps me lose weight or burn fat, it tastes so yummy I could eat it every day! Anyway, here's the recipe:

  • 2 eggs (or 1/2 cup egg substitute, which is what I used)
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 2 tbsp black beans (I didn't have any black beans but it tasted great without them. Maybe that's why I didn't burn any fat today!)
  • 2 tbsp chopped bell pepper (I used purple bells from our garden)
  • 2 tbsp low-fat cheddar cheese
  • 1 tbsp salsa
  • 1/4 of a sliced avocado
Beat eggs and water together in a microwave-safe plastic bag. Add beans, peppers and cheese. Seal the bag (don't squeeze all the air out first, just seal the bag) and lay it flat in the microwave. Cook for 1 minute or until the eggs are set. Carefully open the bag and slide the omelet onto a plate. Serve with salsa and avocado on top. According to Dr. Oz, the peppers and salsa in your southwest omelet contain capsaicin, a fat-burning compound that signals your brain that you're full. Let me know if you try the recipe and if you liked it or not!

Butternut Squash

This is one of 3 butternut squash growing in our garden. I have a feeling though that it is going to die before it gets big enough to pick. Our garden has really been crappy this year.

If you have a veggie garden, how has yours been this year? Has yours been as disappointing as ours?

Not as many tomatoes as last year has really put a damper on the homemade sauce that usually fills up our freezer this time of year. I've only made 2 batches of it so far but last year I must have made about 15 of them. What a difference and such a disappointment.

Marigolds Thrive!

Marigolds never cease to amaze me! They are such hardy flowers that no weather extremes seem to bother them.

Marigolds come in so many colors - each one just as gorgeous as the others. Yellow is my favorite color - always has been - so these pretty yellow marigolds have really caught my eye!

Although our veggie garden hasn't produced a whole lot this summer, our marigolds have been plentiful and have given us much pleasure!

I Made Some Yummy Sauce!

From these yummy homegrown tomatoes comes yummy homemade sauce so that was what I did today. Beginning around 10:00am and not ending until just after 2:00pm, I was in my kitchen making pasta sauce.

I had a lot of plum tomatoes I wanted to use up plus some really ugly 'endless summer' tomatoes that didn't get very red on the outside but they did on the inside. Can't figure that one out but they worked quite well for making sauce.
I added some garlic from our garden along with an onion, some green, purple AND chili peppers that we also grew in our garden and some delicious basil also grown in the garden this year.

Believe it or not, in place of having to add sugar to the sauce, I threw a carrot (good sugar substitute) into the food processor along with a zucchini (great way to use up some extra zucchini) when I pureed the tomatoes, garlic, onion and peppers.

After letting it simmer for quite some time, I then chopped up more green and purple peppers and a few mushrooms I had that needed to get used and threw them in the sauce as well as tons of herbs, spices and grated parmesan cheese.

OH. MY. GOSH! It was the best sauce I've EVER made! Guess what I had for dinner? Yep, you guessed it - whole grain penne pasta with my fresh batch of sauce! Can I just say it was YUMMERS?! Wish I could share it with you but then again, that would mean less for me! Ha!

Sundays are Great!

Sundays are great for reading the newspaper, perusing the sale ads for any really good bargains and for cutting out the grocery coupons. I do this every Sunday morning while enjoying a cup of coffee or two.

FYI~If you think hoarding can't kill you, think again! Such a shame that a local elderly couple died in a house fire fueled by all the clutter created by their hoarding. Very sad and totally could have been avoided!!

Keep Calm & Craft

Sounds like a plan to me! How about you?
If you are a crafter like me, you can certainly appreciate this saying, right?
I created this in my craft room today after finding the 8 x 10 frame that had some really old photos in it. I knew it was time to switch out the photos and put something different in the frame and this is what I came up with. Since the frame isn't very deep, I couldn't add any bulkiness to the papers such as brads or ribbon and the like, so it's a lot plainer than I would normally create. But I really like how it turned out and it is now hanging on the wall in my craft room!

Zigzag Stitch?

Ever see a spider spin a zigzagged web? Me neither! Imagine my surprise when I was taking a photo of my mums - which by the way shouldn't be blooming yet but they are - I spotted this spider hanging in it's web and noticed that part of the web contained some zigzaggy lines in it. Amazing! Is that where the zigzag stitch in sewing originated? I'd really like to know so I guess I'll be doing some research on that! Anyone know what kind of spider this is?

My Favorite Wines

On a recent trip to upstate New York to visit family for my Mom & Dad's 60th anniversary party, which got postponed due to the heat and not wanting to have 10 kids running around in the house, I decided to pop into the best liquor store on the face of the planet - GCP Liquors. They have ANY and EVERY kind of wine you can imagine but best of all, they carry tons of my favorite New York State Finger Lakes wines.

I haven't been able to visit the great wineries in that region for quite awhile and I truly miss them so GCP Liquors is a fantastic way to experience those wineries while not having to visit them.

Luckily I can make a trip to GCP for these delicious wines whenever I visit the family but sure wish my local state store carried them for when I run out. No, not in PA! I can't even order them online from GCP and have them shipped direct to me because the state of PA prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages online from other states! PA is so behind the times! UGH!

Don't worry, 'bee' happy!

You remember that song? Don't worry, be happy! Well, I never really liked the song but we all should follow the message. We need to stop worrying about all that dumb small stuff and make the most of our lives because life is way too short! Agree? I hope you enjoy the card and 'bee' happy!

A Little Birdie Told Me....

Sharing a card I made today for my mom & dad's 60th wedding anniversary! WOW! How amazing is that? 60 years! I hope to make it that long in my marriage as well!

I know this card isn't real fancy schmancy like you would expect an anniversary card to be but my parents will LOVE it! They are not fancy schmancy people so this is just perfect for them!

I created it with the Pemberley paper pack and the Life is Tweet stamp set - both from Close to my Heart and which are no longer available - sorry! However, the burlap ribbon I used is still available as it's a brand new product.

Hope you enjoy the card!
